Open Courseware
in Public Policy and Management

Courseware, a term that combines the words 'course' with 'software,' was originally used to describe supplementary instructional material, usually use with a computer. Its meaning  has expanded and is now used include to the entire course and any additional material when used in reference an online or 'computer formatted' classroom. (See Wikipedia, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courseware#Courseware, accessed 21 March 2013). By this definition, the Atlas provides substantial courseware in the field of public management in the form of syllabi, references, topics, and other resource materials.

The OpenCourseWare (OCW) aim of providing online course materials that are publicly accessible at no charge was given a major boost in 2002 with the launch of MIT OpenCourseWare and MIT's commitment to make publicly available the courseware for all its nearly 2,000 courses. A decade later a number of prestigious universities had created consortia to providing massive open online courses (MOOCs). Currently, the largest MOOC platforms are Coursera, Udacity and edX. A site called Class Central, (www.class-central.com) acts as a MOOC aggregator, providing details on courses offered by all the major MOOC consortia.
