Uppsala Conflict Data Program

Summary: The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) offers a number of datasets on organized violence and peacemaking

Main Points: The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) offers a number of datasets on organised violence and peacemaking:

UCDP Georeferenced Event Dataset (UCDP GED) version 1.5-2011, 1989-2010

Two separate datasets are part of the project:

1. An event-based and georeferenced dataset on all three of the UCDP’s types of organized violence. Each unit of analyses is a single event of organized violence in which it is believed that at least 1 person was killed. Each event is georeferenced in a point format, according to the WGS84 datum. Dataset is in a zipfile, containing the dataset itself, the codebook and additional necessary data. The dataset covers all countries in Africa, from 1989 to 2010. This dataset is called the UCDP GED Point Dataset.

2. A dataset of geographically mapped conflict areas (conflict polygons) for all three of UCDP's types of organized violence. The unit of analysis is the geographical area (spread) of one state-based or non-state conflict or one-sided violence. Both yearly and aggregated polygons (covering the 1989-2010 period) are available for download and visualisation. This dataset is called the UCDP GED Conflict Polygons Dataset.

UCDP External Support Data, 1975-2009 a dataset where the unit of analysis is a warring party-year, providing information on the existence, type, and provider of external support for all warring parties (actors) coded as active in UCDP data, on an annual basis. The dataset contains information for the time-period 1975–2010.

UCDP Actor Dataset v.2.1-2012 an actor dataset, containing information on all actors included in UCDP's datasets on organised violence (UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset, UCDP Dyadic Dataset, UCDP Battle-related Deaths Dataset, UCDP One-sided Violence Dataset and UCDP Non-state Conflict Dataset).

UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2013, 1946 – 2012 a conflict-year dataset with information on armed conflict where at least one party is the government of a state in the time period 1946-2012. The most recent is version 4-2013.

Onset of Intrastate Armed Conflict, 1946-2011. This dataset contains a country-year version of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2012 structured for quantitative analysis.

UCDP Dyadic Dataset v. 1-2013, 1946 – 2012 a dyad-year version of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset. A dyad consists of two opposing actors in an armed conflict where at least one party is the government of a state. The time period covered is 1946-2012.

UCDP Conflict Termination dataset v.2010-1, 1946 – 2009. This dataset provide information on specific start- and end- dates for conflict activity and means of termination for each conflict episode. The data is available as a conflict-level dataset which correspond with the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v4 – 2010, and a dyad-level dataset which correspond with the UCDP Dyadic Dataset v1 – 2010.

UCDP Peace Agreement Dataset v. 2.0, 1975-2011. The new Peace Agreement dataset, that covers peace agreements signed between at least two opposing primary warring parties in an armed conflict 1975-2011. The dataset is compatible with the UCDP Dyadic Dataset v. 1-2012, and UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset v.4-2012. It has been constructed to allow researchers to analyze the different peace agreements. The unit of analysis is the peace agreement; consequently more than one agreement can be registered for one conflict- or dyad-year in the UCDP data. Each agreement is categorized as a comprehensive agreement, a partial agreement or a peace process agreement, depending on if the agreement is seen as a final product in a peace process or if the parties still have outstanding issues that have to be solved. Each agreement is also attributed with conflict, dyad and actor IDs from the other UCDP data to enhance the merging of different UCDP data collections. The UCDP Peace Agreement Dataset includes information on e.g. name, date, signatories and third parties of the agreement. Furthermore, it contains information on the provisions of the accords as well as different variables concerned with the termination of violence.

Uppsala Conflict Database Categorical Variables 1989-2008 a frozen version of the UCDP Armed Conflict Database, corresponding to version 4-2009 of the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset and the UCDP Dyadic Dataset v. 1-2009.

UCDP Non-State Conflict Dataset v. 2.4-2012, 1989-2011 a conflict-year dataset with information of communal and organized armed conflict where none of the parties is the government of a state. The dataset has a temporal scope covering 1989-2011, and includes information on start and end dates, fatality estimates, and locations. The most recent version is version 2.4.

UCDP One-sided Violence Dataset v 1.4-2012, 1989-2011 an actor-year dataset with information of intentional attacks on civilians by governments and formally organized armed groups. The most recent is version 1.4-2012.

UCDP Battle-Related Deaths Dataset v.5-2013, 1989-2012 a conflict-year and dyad-year dataset with information on the number of battle-related deaths in the conflicts from 1989-2012 that appear in the UCDP/PRIO Armed Conflict Dataset. The most recent version is version 5.0.

Managing Intrastate Low-intensity Conflict (MILC) dataset, v. 1.0, 1993-2004 an event-dataset that covers all measures taken by third parties in low-intensity intrastate dyad-years in the time period 1993-2004. The dataset includes information on e.g. the date of each event, name of third party/-ies, total number of third parties, type of measure, the topic of talks etc.
