Program Comparison Highlights

Institutional Structure: The Jindal School of Government and Public Policy (JSGP) is an academic unit within O.P. Jindal Global University.

Curriculum Design: The JSGP's MPP is a two-year (four semester) full-time program requiring 48 course credits (16 one-semester equivalent courses) plus a Policy Action Workshop, an internship and a dissertation. Typical students take about 50% of their course work in subjects that we classify as Tools and Skills or Management Functions and about 22% of their study is in economic or quantitative courses. This places the JSGP MPP "longer-length, lower tools/management, more quantitative" category, along with such programs as the Harvard MPP and Chicago MPP. It has as a relatively low number of elective courses taught within the school.

Professional Program Features: The program website does not contain much information on professional program features although it does list as distinctive features: Curriculum of international standard; Exposure to the latest research trends; Strong emphasis on quantitative and qualitative research skills; Research-active and internationally trained faculty; International student and faculty exchange programmes; and Globally networked career development and placement division.

Students develop quantitative and qualitative analytical skills, receive an exposure to the real world policymaking process, and enhance their managerial skills. The challenge before the policymakers and public leaders is to find solutions to the developmental problems, to defend democratic values, and to resist authoritarian impulses to ‘catch up’ with or mimic less democratic countries. The programme has been designed to equip future policymakers and public leaders with competence to perform effectively in challenging environments." MA Degree Requirements

Summary: The MA in Public Policy MPP) is offered in two track:s

Residential: It is a residential, 5-day a week, degree programme. No work experience is required. The students are required to successfully complete 16 courses spread over four semesters, write a dissertation and undertake eight weeks of internship.

Non-Residential: Students in the non-residential degree programme are required to complete 14 courses spread over four semesters, write a dissertation and two policy briefs. It is a full-time non-residential degree programme with classes held only on Saturdays and Sundays. The students are generally working professionals from Indian Government Departments, Public Sector Companies, Inter-Governmental Organizations, foreign diplomatic missions, print and electronic news media houses, corporations and non-governmental organisations, among others.

Duration: 4 semesters plus an internship.

Academic Prerequisite: Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree from any recognised university in India or abroad. No work experience required for the residential program; at least two years of relevant work experience is required for the non-residential program. There is an entrance examination process: Upon receiving a complete application, JSGP will assign a date when a candidate will have to sit for an online written entrance examination. Candidates will receive a set of questions on contemporary development and policy issues via email at 9:00 am in the morning of the examination day and they will have to write 3 essays (between 500-700 word) and email those back to JSGP by 3:00 pm on the same day. Candidates can choose to sit wherever they wish and consult books. JSGP will reject essays and applications of candidates suspected of plagiarism. An admission counsellor will be available throughout the examination day to answer technical queries. After the written examination, the shortlisted candidates will be interviewed via telephone. A list of selected candidates will be drawn after the interview and based on the position on the selection list, scholarships, fellowships, assistantships and applicable fee waivers, ranging from full to partial, will be provided to meritorious candidates.
