Program Comparison Highlights

Institutional Structure: The School of Public Affairs (SPA) is one of four schools within Arizona State University's College of Public Service & Community Solutions.

Curriculum Design: The Arizona State University, School of Public Affairs (SPA) offers a substantial list of course electives for the MPA and MPP degrees. The two degrees have somewhat overlapping required core courses. Our PEACO analysis below suggests that typical Arizona State MPA students takes 38% of their courses in what we call management-oriented subjects and 62% in policy-oriented subjects, while typical MPP students take 30% of their courses in management-oriented subjects and 70% in policy-oriented subjects. The percentage of courses in math-economics subjects is 17% for the MPA and 24% for the MPP. Given the 14 one-semester-course-equivalent degree requirement for both degrees, this places the Arizona State MPA in what we call the "medium course requirement, policy-oriented, lower math-economics" curriculum type, shared with the Oregon MPA and the USC MPA. It places the Arizona State MPP in what we call the "medium course requirement, policy-oriented, higher math-economics" curricular type, shared with the Syracuse MPA and the George Washington University MPP. The JSGS Program provides a relatively high number of courses and a relatively high proportion of courses taught within the school.

Concentration/Curriculum Overview: Both the MPA and MPP are 14 semester-course degrees, with, respectively, 9 and 11 core courses.

MPA Degree Requirements

Summary:  The MPA program consists of 42 hours (14 courses) of graduate credit. Students take 9 core courses in the School of Public Affairs and 5 approved electives within the School of Public Affairs or other. There are two approved optional concentration areas within the Master of Public Administration degree: a concentration in Urban Management and a concentration in Nonprofit Administration. The Urban Management concentration provides knowledge and skills for students seeking careers in local urban government management and enables students to develop the skills and techniques used by city and urban leaders and managers. The concentration in Nonprofit Administration is intended for professionals who work in or desire to work in the nonprofit sector and who wish to explore research, theory, and the practice of management and leadership in the nonprofit sector. It is not required to complete a concentration.

Duration: Students have 6 years to complete the degree from the first MPA/MPP class.

Academic Prerequisite: Students enrolling in core MPA courses must demonstrate minimum competency in statistics and American government. Competency in statistics is met with a grade of B or higher in one of the approved courses (PAF 301, POS 401, PSY 230, QBA 221, SWU 321, ECN 221, STP 226 or SOC 390) within the past two years or by passing a diagnostic test approved by the MPA/P Committee. Other courses taken within the last two years may be substituted upon approval of the MPA/P Director. Competency in American government is a demonstrated understanding of American government institutions and processes. Students may be required to take an undergraduate class in American government (PAF 200, PAF 300, PAF 340, POS 110 or POS 310). The CLEP Exam can be used to demonstrate competency in American government.

MPP Degree Requirements

Summary: The MPP program consists of 42 hours (14 courses) of graduate credit. Students take 11 core courses in the School of Public Affairs and 3 approved elective courses. The MPP also offers an optional concentration in Policy Informatics where the electives are taken in required concentration courses. 

Duration: Students have 6 years to complete the degree from the first MPA/MPP class.  Note 1: Applicants to the MPA and MPP programs are accepted year-round. Students may be granted admission for Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
