Unemployment

Unemployment is the state of an individual looking for a paying job but not having one. Unemployment does not include full-time students, the retired, children, or those not actively looking for a paying job.

(OECD. 2007. Women and Men in OECD Countries. Paris: OECD)

---------------------------------

For statisticians, the “labour force” is everybody who is either working or is “unemployed”. The “unemployed” are people who are actively looking for work but who have not found employment. The unemployment rate is the number of unemployed as a percentage of the labour force.
