Interest Group

A voluntary, membership-based organization that lobbies governments on issues of concern to its members.

(Pal, 2006, p. 274)

In addition to private interest groups, there may also exist public interest groups who advocate on behalf of the public good rather than the direct self-interest of their members; their emphasis tends to thus be on advocacy for causes and the public interest rather than economic lobbying.
