MPP and MPA Programs
Ryerson University, Department of Politics and Public Administration (DPPA) - MAPPA
Program Comparison Highlights
Institutional Structure: The Ryerson Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration (MAPPA) degree is offered by the Department of Politics and Public Administration, a department within the Faculty of Arts.
Curriculum Design: As a one-year program, Ryerson's Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration (MAPPA) is at the low end of course requirements among MPA and MPP programs. Our PEACO calculations below suggest that typical students take about 56% of their course work in policy-oriented subjects and 44% in management-oriented subjects, and about 4% in courses with high math-economics content. This places the Ryerson MAPPA in the "low course requirement, management-oriented, lower math-economics content" curricular type, along with such programs as the Pennsylvania MPA and the York MPPAL (see MPP/MPA Curricular Types). The competency gap analysis below suggests that a Ryerson MAPPA student taking the required courses and a random selection of listed electives would, on average, graduate with approximately 51 course-weeks of shortfall in the core-competency subject matter identified in MPP/MPA Core Competencies, including shortfalls of 12 course-weeks in Economic Analysis, 9 course-weeks in Leadership Skills, 8 course-weeks in Quantitative Methods, and 6 course-weeks in each of Evaluation and Performance Measurement and Macroeconomic Policy. On the other hand, this student would graduate with well over the minimum competency requirements in Socioeconomic and Political Context.
Professional Program Features: The program hosts an annual Major Research Project (MRP) Conference to "to encourage students to become active scholars in their community: presenting their ideas and critically and constructively commenting on the ideas of others." The Research page of the Department of Politics and Public Administration is found at: http://www.ryerson.ca/politics/research/index.html.
