Curriculum Design: This two-year, full-time MPA has 6 required courses and 10 electives. There is no thesis, though there is a required capstone, and an internship is also required. The program has 11 concentrations: Economic Development, Energy, Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management, Information Systems, International Development, Local Government Management, Nonprofit Management, Policy Analysis, Public Financial Administration, Public Management, Sustainability and Sustainable Development. Among the programs yet examined, the Indiana MPA has a relatively high proportion of instruction in the Management Functions domain (20% compared with Harvard at 3%, Berkeley at 7%, Duke at 8%, Carnegie at 17%, and NYU at 20%). It is in the mid-range of the proportion of instruction in the Institutions and Context domain (15% compared with Harvard at 23%, NYU at 14%, Duke at 13%, and Berkeley at 9%) and the Policy Sectors domain (at 20% it is comparable to NYU at 19%, Duke at 20%, Harvard and Carnegie at 22% and Oxford at 23%). Concentration/Curriculum Overview: The MPA program is designed to produce graduates who have the skills needed to be successful and take on leadership roles in an ever-changing job market. SPEA's MPA program produces graduates who can work well with teams of professionals and can effectively communicate and work with colleagues in a wide variety of disciplines:

·        Economic Development: In this concentration you'll learn the theory and the tools, as well as the practical skills. You'll also learn about economic development policy across a broad range of contexts and settings, taking advantage of case studies and insights provided both locally and globally. In the Economic Development concentration, you'll learn what works and what doesn't, and how the context makes a difference.

·        Energy: Students in this concentration focus on energy policies and technologies, exploring the socioeconomic and environmental consequences of both. They learn the life cycle of energy resources and study the economics of energy production and consumption.

·        Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management: Environmental Policy and Natural Resource Management is a rigorous course of study that integrates skill-based courses in public policy, management, and environmental affairs with training in the environmental sciences.

·        Information Systems: Designed to address the growing gap between the demand for and supply of graduates with information systems skills, the concentration in information systems focuses on the application of information technology to complex problems in organizational and environmental affairs.

·        International Development: The International Development concentration in the Master of Public Affairs is designed to provide students with a policy-focused understanding of international development, and will introduce students to topics such as economic growth, poverty reduction, industrialization, political economy, conflict and post-conflict recovery, sustainable development, international organizations, governance and business activities.

·        Local Government Management: Because careers in the public sector often require the mastery of a complex set of management, leadership, analytical, and quantitative skills, the curriculum for the Local Government Management concentration emphasizes a wide set of proficiencies recognized as necessary for success in local government management

·        Nonprofit Management: In the nonprofit concentration, you'll gain the skills, knowledge, and contacts most relevant for a professional career in the nonprofit sector. The core requirements for the MPA degree provide a strong management and policy base. The concentration addresses the distinctive features and practices of nonprofit organizations and emphasizes management techniques helpful to nonprofit leaders.

·        Policy Analysis: Policy analysis preparation in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) is problem-focused, action-oriented, and interdisciplinary. Students who choose the Policy Analysis concentration will acquire a diverse set of skills that can be applied in many fields-- such as social welfare policy, environmental policy, regulation, and international policy.

·        Public Financial Administration: Students concentrating in Public Financial Administration enjoy the advantages of this leadership position as they embark on their professional careers, whether in the United States or in other countries, in national, state or local government, or in the public or private sectors.

·        Public Management: The Public Management concentration gives students the knowledge, skills, and experiences appropriate for management positions in a variety of public, private, and nonprofit settings. Students will develop skills in strategic thinking, planning, and management, personnel relations, technology, and the design, operation, and evaluation of successful work systems.

·        Sustainability and Sustainable Development: Students who complete the concentration are expected to work for governments, private businesses, and special interest organizations that seek to sustain and improve both current and future conditions for life on earth. The concentration seeks to provide them with both skills and perspectives that will serve the development of their own rewarding careers in this field.

Degree Requirements: The MPA program is a two-year, 48-credit-hour program consisting of four components:
A core curriculum of management, statistics, microeconomics, law, and budgeting courses
A concentration area
An experiential requirement or research program
A capstone project.
