Program Comparison Highlights

Institutional Structure: The MPA is offered through the School of Government and International Relations, one of six (6) departments of Griffith Business School. Within the School of Government and International Relations, the University hosts degree programs in both international relations and in politics & government. These include thirteen undergraduate degrees (ten of which are combined degrees with other schools), the M.P.A. (a "postgraduate" course of study), an M.Phil (a "research" degree), two graduate certificates and two Ph.D. programs. The M.P.A. is offered in both offline and online formats (, accessed 31 March 2015).

Curriculum Design: M.P.A. candidates are required to fulfill 120 credit points, for a total of 1.5 years of study. The degree can be completed either as a "standard pathway" or "dissertation pathway", the primary difference being that in the latter course of study some required courses and all elective courses are replaced with credits awarded for completing a dissertation. Both the standard and dissertation pathways are structured such that four of the required courses constitute the requirements for a Graduate Certificate in Policy Analysis, and if a candidate wishes to terminate studies following the completion of these courses, they may, upon application, be awarded the Certificate in lieu of completing the degree. Both the standard and dissertation pathways are also offered in "advanced standing" format for candidates who already have a Graduate Certificate in Policy Analysis (, accessed 31 March 2015).

MPA Degree Requirements

Summary:  The MPA can be taken according to the standard pathway, or with a 20,000-25,000 word dissertation (“dissertation pathway”) written over the course of two semesters. The length of the programs is identical.

Duration: 1.5 years full-time; 3 years part-time.

Academic Prerequisite: A bachelor degree in a relevant discipline with a minimum GPA of 4.5 on a 7.0 scale, three years of relevant work experience in the public sector or equivalent, or have completed a Graduate Certificate with a GPA of 5.0 on a 7.0 scale. Candidates who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Policy Analysis at the school will be awarded 40 credit points of advanced standing towards the Masters Program and must only complete 80 credits for graduation.
