Note 1: The SSPS website lists two other similar degrees: MRes in Public Policy Research (“This programme provides students with an excellent grounding in social science research methods and theory and in contemporary public policy analytical processes. It is ideally suited for students wishing to undertake a PhD or to work in public/third or private sector organisations”, at, accessed 4 September 2014) and MSc in Public Policy and Management (“This programme combines courses that examine the policy making process, policy analysis and evaluation and real world public policy challenges, with professional management courses It aims to develop future public sector leaders who understand both the organisational contexts and challenges that face governments,” at, accessed 4 September 2014). The latter, it is not listed in the the 2014 prospectus of programmes offered by the University.

Related Academic Units and Degrees: An MRes in Public Policy Research (emphasis on program evaluation and heavier concentration of statistics/analysis courses) is offered, and an MSc in Public Policy and Management appears to have been offered at one point. The School also has a range of other degrees, including a PhD research degree in comparative politics.

Posted Tuition: Yearly tuition is as follows. Domestic (UK and EU): Approximately $9,506 CAD (full-time) and $1,055 CAD (part-time). International: Approximately $24,431 CAD (full-time only).

Concentration/Curriculum Overview

MPA Degree Requirements

Summary:  Students complete 5 core courses and then a series of optional courses. All courses are taught in intensive half-day blocks. Courses are delivered over a period of two semesters, after which candidates complete an independent research project. All assignments in the program are written assignments – there are no examinations.

Note 2: For the purposes of comparison, we are assuming that each course in this program is equivalent to a one-semester course. The independent research project is assumed to be worth one (1) one-semester course equivalent. [*This may need to be changed as it is now 2, not 4 course equivalents]

Duration: 12 months full-time, 24 months part-time (9 months full-time and 21 months part-time for postgraduate diploma).

Academic Prerequisite: 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification (i.e. 3.0 GPA or oabove) in a relevant subject. Good candidates from other disciplines will also be considered, as will those with a lower degree but significant relevant professional experience.

Number of One-Semester-Equivalent Courses Required for Completion: 6 (120 CATS credits)
