Taxonomy

Any system of classification, especially ones that use multiple tiers of classification.

(Ratto, Matt. Class Lecture. FIS 1210 Information and Its Social Contexts. Faculty of Information, University of Toronto.)

---------------------------------

The term taxonomy originally was used to describe the biological classification of living and extinct creatures. The meaning of the term has since expanded to include all classifications, and especially those that rely on a multi-tiered classification system such as the identification of genus/species relationships.
