System-Based Regulation

System-Based Regulation

An approach to regulation based on the creation of acceptable production systems. System-based regulation has process-oriented specifications for rules and standards and creates system controls designed to meet goals.

Peter J. May, “Regulatory Regimes and Accountability” Regulation and Governance, 2007, 1, pp.8-26.

One of three regulatory regimes outlined by May (2007).

Based on the creation of acceptable production systems, system-based regulation has process-oriented specifications for rules and standards, and focuses on creating appropriate system controls designed to meet goals. Adopted in regulating aspects of food safety, industrial health and safety, and nuclear power plant safety.
