Standardized Variable

A variable that has been refined to have a mean of zero and a standard deviation of one.

(Oreopoulos, Phil. Class Lecture. PPG 1004H Quantitative Methods for Policy Analysis. University of Toronto School of Public Policy and Governance.)

------------------------

Standardized variables are useful for comparing variables with different units; standardizing puts all variables on the same scale (standard deviations).  To standardize any variable, for each value subtract the variable's mean and divide by its standard deviation.
