Social Democratic Welfare State

One of three types of “welfare state” regimes described by Gosta Esping-Andersen. The other two types are the conservative and liberal welfare state. The defining characteristics of a social democratic welfare state are that they are characterized by extensive social rights and a marginal role for private welfare provision.

(Esping-Andersen, Gosta. 1990. The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press.)
