Prescriptive Regulation

An approach to regulation that is based on adherence to explicitly prescribed actions. This approach to regulation provides detailed specifications of rules and standards which must be followed and met.

(May 2007)

Prescriptive Regulation is one of three regulatory regimes outlined by May. Based on adherence to prescribed actions, prescriptive regulation is particularistic and has detailed specifications for rules and standards. This is the dominant regulatory approach in the United States for environmental and social regulation.
