Government Bill

A legislative proposal presented to the House by a minister.

(Malcolmson, Patrick and Richard Myers. 2005. The Canadian Regime: An Introduction to Parliamentary Government in Canada, 3rd ed. Peterborough, ON: Broadview Press.)

Government bills have in most cases been generated by some combination of civil service, minister, and cabinet, and they are referred to as government bills because they normally will have received cabinet approval before they are brought to the House.
